I met my husband just over 7 years ago. I was pregnant with my first child and single. We became really good friends, but didn’t think much of it. There’s a bit of an age gap and he already had 2 grown children of his own and had a vasectomy back in 1994. Over the next 18 months, our friendship grew into something special. I can honestly say I fell in love with my best friend. He always knew I wanted to have more children, but I wasn’t quite ready. He was excited at the possibility of being a Dad again and my son had been begging us for years to give him a sister. He thought if he got a sister that he wouldn’t have to share his toys or bedroom.
We started researching potential ways to expand our family. We could have the procedure reversed but the odds were against us as it would have taken a couple of years for the sperm to be viable again. We spoke to our GP who recommended seeing a fertility specialist to discuss IVF. I was totally against this at the start. I wasn’t comfortable with injecting myself with “foreign” substances when I fell pregnant naturally before.
We met with Dr Smith at WFC in August 2015 and over the next month had all the necessary tests to make sure we were both good to go. He eased my mind about the whole process. I felt comfortable, relaxed and informed. Our first cycle was a bit of a rollercoaster. My dose was low as I had quite a number of follicles and we needed to ensure I didn’t over stimulate. My arms were bruised from all the blood tests, my belly was bruised from injecting into a blood vessel and there were times where I was warned my cycle might be cancelled because I didn’t have enough follicles large enough for collection. The injections were easy to use and although there were times I was extremely moody, I felt proud of myself for not letting the hormones get to me, too much. I knew on collection day my eggs would be fertilised and frozen as my body was not ready to accept. My poor hubby was in another room having a PESA done. He tells me that the local hurt more than the procedure and he was bruised for a good week or two. It took a little longer than I expected for my body to be ready. I was stressed because I was waiting to ovulate over the Christmas period.
All the nurses at WFC were so helpful and explained everything to me to help me feel at ease and understand why. We had our beautiful blastocyst transferred on the 13th of January 2016. 10 days later we tested and were overwhelmed with our 2 pink lines. We involved our son in the whole process, from start to finish. He saw me inject, he came to every ultrasound and was passing up and down the hallways whilst I was in labour.
Our beautiful daughter was born in September 2016 and is now 4 months old and her big brother is super excited about his little sister. Everyone’s fertility story is different. There is hope for couples where the man has had a vasectomy. Our little Holly is proof of that. Thank you WFC for everything. We can’t wait to come back at the end of the year to add to our family.
